"ALFONSA CAVIN GIRLS PROMOTION SCHOOL"

The Alfonsa Cavin Girls Promotion School, for the women's promotion, is a non-profit entity run by the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate conception at the St. Joseph's Catholic Hospital compound in Monrovia. The Missionary Sisters belong to a worldwide religious congregation of the Catholic Church. The school is one of the many vocational schools, run by the Catholic Church, in the sub-region and other places in the world. The sole purpose of the school is not only the education, but to promote human values to the less
fortunate women in our society with particular emphasis on those belonging to the community of Old road neighborhood and its environs who have been under priviliged. The official opening of Alfonsa Cavin Promotion School, took place in the year 1996 and was run by the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, with our fellow Sister Luisa, a spanish sister as the head and assisted by a lay man as a teacher. At that time, classes were restricted to a single subject, the sewing classes, and the group target were girls between 12 and 18 years old. The intention was to award certificates of achievements to deserving students
after nine months of intensive training in that single subject mentioned above. But due to the demand caused by the idleness of women in the Liberia's post war, the management of the school decided to admit women of all ages, something wich led to overcrowding in the school. Just to give an example, in 2002 and 2003, our enrollment went up to 65 students, a number which almost doubles the established capacity of the school that was initially meant for 40 students. The school through the years the years has made enormous sacrifices. At the moment four teachers are teaching the following subjects: sewing, tie and dye, home economics, baking, primary health care (PHC), all craft (under sewing). The school now runs its own advance training course for nine consecutives months, after completing the first nine months for beginners. The school was previously
managed by Sister Esther Biribe, a missionary sister of the Immaculate Conception from Equatorial Guinea, who was hardly distinguishable from a Liberian woman due to her closeness and interest for Liberian women especially when its comes to their educational needs. At present, she is the provincial Superior of the Missionary Sisters of Africa. For the past five years, the school has been run by Sr. Paciencia Melgar, with other five other trainers, who have been helping her with the management of the school. Following the same
objectives and attempting everyday to improve the image of the school, the same promotion school introduced the soap making teaching and producing, to its list of vocations in the 2008/2009 academic year, then in the 2009/2010 academic year, we added interior decoration and hairdressing respectively. We encourage all to take advantage of this institution's programs and to be part of it as students in the near future.
